Parakrama commenced his creative activities four decades ago with wide-ranging vision and objective of fashioning a just and cultured society. It’s only symbolical that he contributes towards forming the first ever ‘Street Theatre Group’ in Sri Lanka shouldering the responsibility of demanding task of being the organizer of the group from 1974 to 1978. Since then he has engaged in creative work in the fields of theatre arts, cinema and television with the same enthusiasm bagging national and international awards for his creations in all three artistic fields. Out of these three artistic forms theatre arts was the most loved and most occupied field of arts of Parakrama. For creative activities in theatre arts he has been awarded the Best Director not only once or twice but seven times at the annual State Drama Awards.
The manner this veteran artiste acted in the context of communal conflict has given a precedent for the future artistes in Sri Lanka as well as an excellent image for all the people of this country. Janakaraliya Theatre Arts institution and the Mobile Theatre could be treated as the pinnacle of his socio cultural vision and creative activities. He has bestowed an exemplary model of cultural coexistence hitherto assumed to be impossible within the context of a communal conflicts ridden society. Creating the first ever fulltime multi ethnic theatre group by integrating a group of youth coming from different communal, religious and socio-cultural backgrounds from across the country training them and inculcating inclusiveness and making them unofficial ambassadors for ethnic harmony has been the most valuable national duty of this elite Sri Lankan.
Thus Parakrama has selflessly dedicated his services successfully for four decades to promote peaceful coexistence in our society through cultural activities. At present he is devoting his social activities towards promoting another national service. He, together with artistes who believe that a cultural policy is a must to create an inclusive society, is in the process of creating a social movement to form such a cultural policy for the betterment of the nation.
